Every time we use a slow shutter speed, whatever's not moving really really fast is going to become beautifully reflective, going to become like a mirror, and it's going to bring all this light down from the buildings, including this crisscross pattern from the bridge, down onto our water source. Probably the biggest secret with slow shutter speed is it can be done during the day. There is a fantastic filter called a variable ND and by rotating the filter slightly, I can make it completely see-through or completely dark, controlling how much light is entering my camera at whatever time of day I want. This is really fantastic for things like waterfalls. When we have water that's running, rather than becoming a reflective, mirror-like surface, it's going to become misty and almost cloud-like. By using a variable ND filer during the day, we can control our shutter speed to the point where that water is doing fantastic things in what would typically be a nighttime environment. One of the greatest, greatest uses for the ND filter, and using it during the day, is to eliminate tourists from our photographs. Everyone's been to a national landmark like Machu Picchu or the Eiffel Tower or the Statue of Liberty with thousands of tourists crowding the photograph. It's probably the most annoying thing about being on vacation. Using a slow shutter speed through the variable ND filter, I can eliminate hundreds of tourists from the photograph. The biggest secret is anything moving faster than your shutter speed is going to ghost or eventually vanish from the photograph. By having that slow shutter speed during the day, we can't see any of the hundreds of tourists that were there at the same time as I was. So the slower the shutter speed, generally the better your landscape photograph.

This is something that's been researched, and there are definitely genetic conditions that are associated with autism, something like Fragile X. And that is a testing done often in children diagnosed with autism. It is rare but there's an abnormality in the extra chromosome being transmitted that is an issue in some children. However, this is a very small percentage of children who get diagnosed with autism who actually has a Fragile X problem. There are other medical conditions which are genetically known. But the understanding is that it's not one gene but there are multiple genes. And it's probably a host of little differences whether you call them de novo mutations or changes that take place or a single nucleotide polymorphisms called SNPs which can contribute and work together as a cascade to cause a difference in the immune system, in the methylation cycles, and so many other areas that are important in the neurochemistry and the neurobiology of the brain. So there is underlying genetic differences, and it is interesting that some of the genes that have been associated with autism are also involved with gastric function, with immune function. And a huge amount of research is coming out in this area. Something simple, not just with major genes but genes that code for enzymes. This is going to get a little complex as I use words like the creation of folic acid. It has to be converted to folinic acid. And you need MTHFR, methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase which is an enzyme that converts the folic acid to folinic acid. And children with the autism spectrum often can have one of two of the LLs or pieces missing in the creation of this enzyme. And if this enzyme is not working effectively, you may have some issues in the creation of folic acid which you need for your brain and for a neurotransmitter functioning which is important for the creation of dopamine, serotonin, norepinephrine. I'm going into major chemistry here, but that's what genetics involves. So it's not just a simple gene, but it's a cascade of genes. And it's not just the major chromosomes that we're talking about but the subareas, the DNA creation of even enzymes and the generic variations at that level that may be involved or that are involved and need to be researched and worked with in children with an autism spectrum disorder.

So I found clinically that teaching clients mindfulness exercises, in fact, can be quite helpful at teaching them to learn to validate their experience of anger, get to know what sort of brings it on, how to predict how long it's going to stay, and then to sort of increase their self regulation, and that is their willpower about how to behave while they're experiencing anger. So there are a couple of schools of cognitive behavior therapy or behavior therapies that have been used, that take a mindfulness approach and it can be applied to anger. The first is one called dialectical behavior therapy or D.B.T. And that was originally created and developed for borderline personality disorder. And borderline personality disorder, there are lots of these folks who, in fact, struggle with issues around anger. So while the D.B.T. overall helps all of their symptoms, we do know that when utilizing the core mindfulness skills, it do seem to learn to do a much better job with their anger. And so, a few of the things you can focus when you're practicing mindfulness from this standpoint is first learning simply observe the emotion. So that's without judgment, just noticing what's there. The second is, we want to teach clients to learn how to describe what is going on. Again, without judgment, but to experience it and describe it. And then finally, we want to get them to participate. And that means sort of becoming one with it or accepting it, sort of mindfully experiencing it and then instinctively behaving or participating with what wouldn't be the most effective strategy given the situation. So we have observe, describe, and participate. Now, A.C.T., acceptance in commitment therapy is a behavior therapy that also uses sometimes mindfulness techniques to allow clients to experience their emotions without judgment and to begin to distance themselves from it so they still can act or behave in ways that help them achieve their goals. So again, these two forms of anger management are not about necessarily changing the emotion and reducing the intensity immediately by using mindfulness, rather opening up to the feeling in ways that we can improve our self-regulation so that we're not behaving in maladaptive ways and doing something that would be self-sabotaging. One of the ways in A.C.T. that you can do that is very similar to what I said in D.B.T. is you can first notice the emotion that's there, then name it and neutralize it. Create some distance, recognizing that you are not the same thing as your emotion, rather your experiencing the emotion, which means a couple of things. It's not part of my identity and it's temporary. This is going to come and go. It has a beginning, a middle, and an end. So by using mindfulness, we learn to become aware that emotions are temporary and they don't have to dictate what our next behavior is going to be. If we practice these skills again and again, and over time we can learn to experience them and still behave in ways that are very adaptive.

There are several different techniques and several reasons why one would need to create or re-create an ear. Most commonly there is a condition called microtia, and this is when a child is born without a normal appearing ear. In this setting, plastic surgeons need to create an actual ear. There are several different ways we can do this, in fact, there are thee different ways we can do this. The first way is by using a synthetic ear replica that latches on to the side of the child or the adult's head. There are problems with this, and that it has to be taken off every night and it can fall off at inopportune times. The second way to correct this is by using a synthetic implant, an implant made of silicone or some other substance that is put into a pocket underneath the skin and left in place. I also don't perform this procedure usually, because I don't like using synthetic, non-natural material in a patient's face. So, the procedure that I perform is that I take rib cartilage, I will not perform this procedure prior to a child being nine years old. So, we take rib cartilage from at least a nine year old child's rib, that cartilage is then carved into the shape of an ear, sewn together with steel suture and that ear construct is then put underneath the skin and creates and actual ear. The procedure often involves additional procedures in order to increase the appearance and the contour and the elevation of the ear, but I believe that using a patient's own cartilage and a patient's own tissue to reconstruct their ear is the best way to perform ear construction or ear reconstructive surgery. So that's an overview of the three most common ways to perform microtia reconstruction, however, again I believe that using a patient's own cartilage is the best way to perform this procedure.

In this segment we are going to take a brief overview of the threes of the minor arcana. The threes are associated on the tree of life with the third sephirah, Binah the great mother, the sephirah which means understanding. It is the great sea out of which multiplicity will come, which births the entire rest of the tree of life. In fact, the name of the number three is multiplication, and Pythagoras called three the first real number because finally instead of just a point for the one or a line, two points for the number two, we have a triangle and that is the first real form. Every three has a certain stability which can never be upset, but which can issue forth a child or birth something. The three of wands is called the lord of established strength and it is the sun in Aries. We see someone, perhaps the magician at the height or zenyth of his powers. It's a golden afternoon. Look at that golden light that suffuses the card and he's standing high on a cliff, watching his ships come in. This is established strength. He's not aiming for anything, he is there. When you get this card in a reading on the higher polarity it is attainment, achievement, tangible results, but all done with honor, vigor, the energy of the wands. There's self respect here, there's attainment. On the lower polarity it may have gotten there by ruthlessness, power drive, and really perhaps the ship is going to sink or not come in at all. The three of cups, the lord of abundance, and this astrological attribution is the planet Mercury, planet of the mind, and Cancer the most receptive of signs. So therefore it shows the receptivity of the mind and therefore creativity can flow in. We see the three graces toasting to the joy of life. This is a card of creative abundance and it's well aspected or in its higher polarity it's creativity, joy, merriment, perhaps even a child going to be born or a marriage going to take place, but certainly there is plenty to celebrate here and inspiration. On the lower polarity maybe there's too many ideas, too much inspiration with which you really don't do anything at all. Perhaps the cups spill out and there is disappointment or a blocked creative feeling. The three of swords is a very special card because it is called the lord of sorrow, but it has a very high astrological attribution, this Saturn, the planet of karma in Libra the sign of justice and harmony. Saturn is exalted in Libra. This is no ordinary sorrow as Crowley points out in his book of thought. This is [inaudible 03:50] the world's sorrow, the sorrow that unites all human beings. I see it as the compassionate grieving of the mother because all threes come from Binah, because the great mother knows that when she gives life she also gives death. On the lower polarity it's just paralyzing depression, not understanding the sorrow, and the mind turned upon itself in a very vicious way. First, you have to talk about how do you make bread with a crust on it and what kinds of crusts you're looking for.The best bread that makes a crusty bread is one that's been slowly fermented or retarded overnight in the refrigerator, so that's number one. Number two is make a bread that doesn't contain any fat in it, so make a baguette dough or make a sourdough bread. Something that's a straight dough that doesn't have fat in it,and that you retard overnight in your refrigerator. That causes a reaction in the bread, and it basically allows the bread to develop a thicker crust in the oven. The third way to make a crustier bread is definitely by steaming the bread and providing some steam for the bread It's also another way to make a crustier bread is to have a bigger loaf of bread, where you need a longer period of time in the oven to dry it out in the inside, but then that sort of permits the outside crust to get crustier. But to me, really what makes a crustier bread is proper fermentation and a long fermentation, to me the longer fermentation, the crustier your bread is going to be.

So for your single leg Romanian deadlift you're going to be on one leg. And this is a little bit more advanced. You want to really make sure that your abs are nice and tight. They're always engaged to keep your core stable. That's where you're going to get your balance from when you do this. So I'm going to show you first, and then I'll walk you through it. So pretty much, you're just coming all the way down, bring that back leg up, and then bring it right back up just like that. You take it down, and up, down, and up. So, here you want to focus on pressing through that heel. That's the key on every exercise that you do for a sexy butt. You want to really make sure you push the weight all the way back in that heel so it really targets the back of the leg and your butt. As you're coming down you have a slight bend in the knee, soft knee here, and your shoulders rolled back, chest up. Make sure you keep that posture. As you come down really think about digging through that heel pushing the weight back. Then as you come up you raise the left leg up or the other leg that you're not standing on. So, you're coming all the way down pushing that weight all the way back into that heel, bringing that other leg up, and then coming right back down just like that. You're going to feel this right away even after one. It's going to feel really deep in the back of the leg, the hamstring, and the butt right here. So, you're coming down. Keep the shoulders rolled back, the chest up. And up just like that. And I'll show you on the other side. Again, you can do ten on each side, or you can alternate. I prefer to tire out one side and then the other. So do ten on one side, and then switch to the other side. Also, here, you can add weights to this when you feel like you need to spice it up a little bit. So, you can grab a weight, take it all the way down, and up just like that, keeping your focus on pushing the weight all the way back. And that's how you do a single leg deadlift for a sexy butt.

And they can be further be divided. Long term memory, the psychologist will tell you can be divided into explicit and implicit. If you study something and seek to remember it for a long period of time using any of the methods here or that you learned elsewhere, that's the explicit long term memory that you develop. Implicit long term memory is perhaps the car accident you saw a year ago that was quite terrible, that made an impression that stays with you. Short term memory is your everyday functional memory. Anything from what you had for breakfast to who you have to call right now, to how to remember what you have to do next. That's your short-term memory. Seeing something and do you remember it. The systems that we learn typically most affect and are most helpful for our short term memory. Short term, I can't place a time limit on it. If I memorize something I usually tell myself how long I want to remember it, and then I may repeat whatever trick I've used, whatever visualization I've used and you can see a number of them in this video series. Perhaps the next day, I'll just review what I learned and perhaps one day more. Then I've taken that short term memory and turned it into an explicit long term memory.

Low self-esteem means that the child really isn't feeling so good about themselves, and you want to figure out a way to help them with that. Now, of course, the impulse as a parent is to rush in and say, "You're great. You're terrific. I love you, somebody will. Everybody will know that," and just give them all those things you do to make them feel good from where you stand. But it doesn't mean that that's how they feel on the inside. Unfortunately, parents have a tough job. They're going up against a lot of things that influence their children, from pop culture, from media to their peers, kids have a lot of things influencing how they feel about themselves. And what you want to do is help kids feel good about themselves on the inside, regardless of all these messages that they're seeing and hearing from the outside, and it's not easy. Now, some kids may be just more prone to feeling bad about themselves, or a little more insecure, or a little more anxious or worried in general, and embarrassed. There's a few things that you can always do to try and help boost your child's self-esteem or make sure that they have a positive self-image. One is watch your own comments about yourself and about other people. If you're somebody that's always competing with the next door neighbor or with those images in the media, your child's going to pick up on that and think that that's important. You also don't want to compare children one to the other or to some standard that really doesn't fit for them. You want to help them with thoughts that are positive, so give them ideas and ways to puff themselves up and feel better about themselves as opposed to negative thoughts that they may have in their head. So talk to them about things that they can do and say about who they are and what they do and what makes them special. You may want to sit down and make a list with them and talk about, "Why are you kind of important and special?" and "What makes you the kind of friend your friends like?" or "What are you good at in school?" or "What are some of the qualities that make you unique?" and have your child be paying attention to those. You want to also put your child in situations where they will start to feel better about themselves and be doing things and with people that make them feel happy, make them feel strong and confident. Now the last thing is, there's no question that at some time in a child's life things aren't going to go their way. What you want to do is make sure that they're prepared and can somehow withstand whatever those difficult times are, those rejecting comments, those negative experiences in their life. So that no matter what goes on on the outside, they can still feel positive about their own qualities on the inside. Make sure you expose your child and your family to all sorts of kinds of people, so that they understand that there's a range of people and abilities and styles out there, so that they can understand that there's a tolerance for difference. And also, at times, you're going to have to make sure that you're there for your child whether they succeed or they fail, so your child can learn for themselves how to manage both success and failure.

The first thing to remember is that we're on the same side. The parents just want what's best for their child. We want what's best for their child. Sometimes we don't agree on how to get there or there's just been a miscommunication between us and the parents, or no communication. So the best place to start is assuming the best about the parents, that whatever they might be saying, their aggression, their anger, their frustration with you is really just coming from a place of "I want my student to do well or my child to do well and they're not. I don't know what to do about it and I don't want to be the source of the problem so I'm going to blame you." And we can all relate to that. And that will soften if we can assume that. If we can assume the best about the parent, it can soften the way that we deal with them. So the parents might be saying, "Why are you doing this?" Or, "You can't do this." I like to start by saying, "I hear how upset you are and I feel how frustrating this is for you and I can totally understand that, but what I'm choosing to do in the classroom is in the best interest of you son or daughter." Everything I do is always in their best interest and you might not agree with the way I'm going about it and we can have a conversation about that, and if you have a better idea how I can go about dealing with their disruption or dealing with whatever the issue is, and it's better than what I've come up with, I will definitely adopt it as the way that I deal with them in the future. But we need to have a conversation and we need to get on the same page about what is happening with your student. Oftentimes, I find that when parents are angry at me or they're coming at me aggressively, it's because the student has told them something out of context or has exaggerated something in some way and they're taking their child word for it and that's fine, and they just needed to have that cleared up for them. But if their anger comes at me and I get all defensive, then it's hard for me to explain to them in a rational way the context in which the thing occurred and why I handled it the way I did. In the end, just accept that anger is part of an emotional process that goes on between parents and teachers and kids but we're all on the same side and we can get there if we can help the parent see that we're also on their side. We also want what's best for their child and everything we're doing is trying to create that. Then we can work together to help the child.
