Number one, get a seating chart. Have a seating chart. Do not let middle school students sit wherever they want to sit. They'll sit next to their friends and they'll drive you crazy. Have a seating chart. I like at the beginning of the year, actually, to seat my students before I know them and who shouldn't sit next to whom. I like to have my seating chart be alphabetical by their first names. That way, as I'm trying to learn their names, it helps me because if I'm looking over here in aisle number one, I know that name starts with an A or a B. Adam? Adrian? Right? But it helps me remember kind of what their names are. As the year progresses then, obviously you can move them to different parts of the room but always, I think have a seating chart. Also, with middle school students you want to have them moving as much as possible. Their little bodies are going crazy, and the more that we can help them kind of move some of that out by having movement incorporated into our lessons, the less they're going to be fidgeting at their tables, distracting each other during silent seat work and other activities like that. Have them stand up every ten minutes. Do a jumping jack or turn around, do the hokey pokey, or whatever it is. Or have them stand up and pair. Anytime you want them talking with other people that can be done from standing instead of from sitting. So instead of turn to a partner and share for 33 seconds about what I was talking about, stand up, high five the person next to you, share something about what we were talking about, sit back down. Once they have the freedom to move their adolescent bodies around a little bit, they will be much more calmer when they are actually needed to sit in their seats and do what we are asking them to do. The last thing I would say is try to incorporate humor into your instruction. Laughter is great for learning. When we laugh our circulation increases, which is great for the brain because is pushes oxygen and glucose into the brain, but also it releases endorphins and endorphins are a mood enhancer. Laughter is always great for learning. If you're not a very funny teacher then just bring in some jokes. Pull them off of the internet, and try to tell a couple of them to your class. You'll probably fail but they'll think it's hysterical that you even tried and that will soften them for you which is great for rapport and relationship in the classroom as well. If you're not comfortable doing that, have joke time in your class. Kids if we get through what we need to get through in the next 10 minutes, then before we transition to the next activity, we're going to have one minutes of joke time where you can tell the class jokes. Now, don't tell any inappropriate joke because if you do, then you'll never get to participate in joke time again, but if you have an appropriate joke... then some students, three or four students can share a joke, everybody has a laugh and you move on. It's great for learning. It's great for teaching. It's great for middle school students.

Brioche à Tête & Brioche Nanterre | Make Bread

RECIPE: 440 g all-purpose flour; 215 g eggs; 40 g water; 10 g salt; 55 g sugar; 30 g fresh yeast; 220 g. unsalted butter softened. Mix all ingred. except butter using dough hook attachment on 1st speed about 3 min.; increase to med. speed and knead for 5 min. Mix in butter on 1st speed. Put dough in oiled bowl; let ferment 1 hr. Fold dough and refrig. overnight. Shape as desired. For a tete, divide into 50 g pieces and round them. Proof until doubled in size, about 3 to 4 hours. Egg wash the brioche and bake in 350F about 20 minutes. Okay, so now we're getting ready to bake our brioche a tete. They've been proofing for about three hours, give or take depending how warm your room is and we're going to sort of test them to see how proofed they are. You can see that my indentation on the side brioche a tete holds, so they're definitely ready to go into the oven. And I'm going to make an egg wash and we want to coat these with an egg wash, before we bake them, so I'm going to crack an egg, and then my favorite thing to do when I'm making egg wash is to use a very, very large pinch of salt.That big pinch of salt helps to break down the protein in the egg, and that helps to coat the baked good a little bit more evenly. I'm going to whisk my egg really, really well, and then I'm just going to just gently coat the brioche, just very lightly with the egg wash. The egg wash browns in the oven and so it will create a very beautiful mahogany brown. It also cooks off and it creates a shiny coating on the surface of the brioche. Moistening the surface of the brioche also helps the brioche expand in the oven. So now I'm going to do the same thing with my brioche nanterre loaf. If you didn't put the egg wash on the brioche, what would happen is first the brioche wouldn't have that beautiful brown golden shiny color, and then the second thing that would happen is that the surface would dry out, and as the bread continued to bake it would crack open through the surface. And so this is what provides the moisture, so that doesn't happen. These are going into a 350 degree preheated oven, and I'm going to set the timer for 10 minutes and then I'm going to rotate them and check on them. Okay, so our brioche a tete have been in the oven for 20 minutes now and they're ready to come out. They're a nice golden brown. So I'm going to take them out of the oven, and they should look like this. They should be a really beautiful brown color and they should come out really easily out of the pan. You want to be very careful when you're touching bread right out of the oven, because it's very hot. I'm going to just do this really quickly, so that they can cool down outside of the pan. Okay, so our nanterre has been in the oven at 350 degrees for 25 minutes and it's ready to come out. You can see it's a beautiful golden brown color and we are just going to remove it like that. It's brown on the bottom. It's hollow when you tap it and we're just going to let it cool down. So these are some ways to shape brioche.

And today we're going to talk about how detoxing can fix your skin. So one of the most important things to remember is that skin conditions can show up on the outside, like pimples and acne and even eczema and psoriasis, begin deep inside the body. They only show up at the surface once the internal system has reached critical mass. And the system, in trying to purge the waste through, pushes it out through the skin. By detoxifying, you're actually going to be removing that which is causing the skin eruptions to begin with. Most skin conditions originate from an overwhelmed bowel and from too much yeast in the system. Stress can be a huge contributor to skin issues especially eczema and psoriasis. The skin is a living, breathing organ. It's your largest organ and it's the second largest eliminative organ. The colon is the largest eliminative organ. These pathogens are often a major contributor to skin issues. So as they are removed from the body along with the waste, you'll also see these skin issues resolve themselves.

First of all, it's really important to know that you're not actually hungry. If you're juice-fasting, you're taking in a huge number of nutrients, life force, vitality and oxygen. Your cells are getting more nutrients than they would ever get if you're eating normally. So, you're not actually hungry, you're feeling - you're having an experience of missing the food that you're programmed to get at certain times, and that's a completely different thing. Understanding that unless you're feeling low blood sugar and light-headed and feel like you're going to pass out, which would be because you're not getting enough vegetable juice while you're fasting, you are not actually hungry. Now, the question then becomes what to do or how to deal with the desire to consume - the compulsion to consume food because you're not feeling full and you're not feeling like you're not having the chewing experience, you're having the swallowing experience, you're not having the full feeling that you're used to having multiple times each day. So, for that I recommend a few things; one is to distract yourself with things that you really enjoy doing. So, non-food activities that you love, could be anything from pampering yourself, like making a spa out of your home, and having luxurious baths, and massaging your feet, or going for a massage, or going to a spa to going for a beautiful walk in nature or meeting a friend for tea or for juice. You can still be really social around your fasting liquids. If you love to read, choose a great book, do a great project, do something that you've been wanting to do for so long but haven't had the time to do. Immerse yourself in something till you're unburdened by the feeling of the duration of time that you're not eating. There are so many things you can do. You can go to a movie, you can watch a movie at home, you can meditate. Think of all the things that you really love to do, and do them while you're fasting and you won't miss the food. One of the things that helps me the most when I'm juice fasting is knowing I can have some vegetable broth. The vegetable broth is very grounding, it's very earthy and it's very filling and it's warm. So, make yourself a delicious bowl of vegetable broth - one caveat would be to just make sure you're getting a natural, organic vegetable broth, unless you're making it yourself. Don't buy bouillon cubes, don't buy anything that has GMO or MSG, be really careful because you want to make sure it's very, very pure. When you do make a good vegetable broth, it will deeply satiate you and you'll be able to progress with your juice-fast. And we sometimes forget what it was like when we were teenagers. Basically there's a couple of variables you want to think about when you're thinking about how to help your teenager. One is a lot is going on physically for them in terms of changes. So not only do they feel all different on the inside, they might not quite know what to do with who this new person is, physically. So there's a lot of just changes in terms of how they look and also how other people are responding to them. Then the things that are going on emotionally are that they're trying to separate, become independent people and those teenage years are when they're trying to figure out who they are, figure out their identity. And if it's successful, really, to have some separation and independence from their parents. When teenagers are acting angry it can actually be for lots of different reasons. Some of them are normal and what we expect, and some of them might be worrisome. So when you're dealing with an angry teen, first of all, you want to pick your battles, and when you're doing that you want to think about what's going on and understand that sometimes that anger is about asserting themselves, trying to separate in maybe the only way they know how, which may feel rejecting but is actually a way to try and be on their own. You have to know what's important is to still be that safe and secure home base, no matter how old your teen is. So when they're going out and testing out these new identities in the world, they know where to come back. The anger may also be an expression of some other things that are going on with your teen. You want to think about, and really pay attention to if it's a sign of other kinds of problems. When you're dealing with an angry teen, it's often important to make sure you keep lines of communication open. What you want to do with that anger is sometimes turn it into talk and conversation and dialogue. Angry feelings sometimes automatically get people to shut down the communication when in fact you want to increase it, and understand and listen to each other rather than just criticize or disagree with each other. Now, the last thing you want to make sure you think about is what else might be going on, and if that anger is actually about something that's more difficult for that teen. So angry teens may be kids that are having difficulties with substances; maybe they're abusing drugs, maybe they're actually trying to manage and self-medicate some other emotional problems that they're having. So you want to keep an eye on and think about if you need some other kinds of help to understand and then manage that angry teen.

Keep in mind, the reward is the key to successful potty training. It's important to find a reward that is highly motivating for your child. My key phrase when talking about choosing a reward is, "What would my child climb mountains to get?" And it could be anything and everything. It can be a food or candy item, it can be a sweet treat or it can be a new toy. You can choose matchbox cards or you can use stickers or bubbles. Whatever is motivating for your child is what you want to use for potty training. Also think outside the box. You typically wouldn't give your child a spoonful of frosting or a sip of soda, but if your child would climb mountains to get it, then you want to use it as reward for potty training. If your child is highly motivated by one toy, it's okay to reuse that toy over and over again. Every time your child has a success on the potty, he can play with that toy for 10 or 15 minutes and then it needs to be put away. And next time he goes pee in the potty, he can get it out again. Same for activities like a kid's show or a computer game or an even bigger toy like a bicycle or a trampoline. If your child is highly motivated by those, obviously he doesn't get a new one every time, but he can have time with that game or activity every time he goes pee in the potty. It's important that he receives enough of the reward that he feels rewarded but not satiated. So you only want to give him a bite of a cookie or five minutes with a new toy and then it needs to be put away. And he can get more or he can get the toy again the next time he has a success. And that's how you choose rewards for potty training.

The first thing to realize is some anxiety is normal. It's not a feeling we ever can get rid of because it's useful. It keeps us safe, it tells us when there's danger sometimes, and do things to take care of ourselves, but when you have a child who's anxious, you want to think about what is making them anxious and see how you can help them. One thing is, don't ever dismiss or minimize their anxiety, because it's a real feeling to them. Of course, you want to think about if it's out of proportion to what the situation is and then help them rein it in, feel more in control, feel calmer, feel safer. There's a few things that go into feeling anxious. It's often about feeling physically anxious and that's your heart may be beating fast, you may be breathing really fast, your palms may be sweating, you may feel tense and nervous. You also may be thinking, in your head, that there's danger, something awful is going to happen. You're feeling threatened. You're thinking about some awful thing that's looming somewhere and then, what's happening is you sometimes are doing things that are trying to take care of the anxious feeling. You may be avoiding situations. You may be running away. You may actually be clinging. All of those behaviors tell you that a child is feeling anxious. What might be some good strategies for your child? Once you've established that they're really worried about something, you may talk to them about what's on their mind and maybe problem solve and work through what some of those things are and help them literally just stop thinking about it by distracting them with something else, so it takes their mind off of it and put their minds somewhere else. If it's their body that's showing you and telling them that something is dangerous or they're feeling anxious, you may do things to help them calm their body. Yoga, breathing, even physical activity will make their body feel different and minimize or maybe take care of or get rid of that anxious feeling. Then, there's the behaviors that they may be doing or showing you that's communicating the anxiety. Maybe they're avoiding places, they don't want to go to a party because they're afraid that they'll be embarrassed or they're a little nervous in terms of being a little shy. Then, maybe what you need to do is practice with them, role play some really good behaviors to take care of that, in terms of making them feel more confident. So, basically, when you're talking about an anxious child and how to help them, first of all, accept it, acknowledge it and let them know you understand it. Then, try to help them with maybe their thoughts, their feelings, and behaviors. If you feel like their anxiety's interfering with their sleeping, with their school work, with their getting along with their friends, or even at home, then seek out a professional who can help you learn some really good strategies and possibly even help you and your child with cognitive behavior therapy techniques that really are lifelong skills, so that anxiety, if it crops up, a child can feel they have skills to manage it.
